Secondly, Bauhaus architecture was influenced by the artistic and cultural movements of the 1920s, such as expressionism, constructivism, and surrealism. It experimented with new forms of expression, such as collage, photomontage, and typography, and incorporated art, craft, and design elements into its buildings. Bauhaus architects also collaborated with artists, musicians, and dancers to create interdisciplinary works that explored the relationship between space, movement, and sound. Bauhaus architecture was both a functional and practical style and a creative and innovative one. Thirdly, Bauhaus architecture reflected the social and political values of the Weimar Republic, the democratic and progressive state that emerged in Germany after the war.

Meyer, who headed up the architecture department, was an active communist, and incorporated his political ideas into student organizations and teaching programs. The school continued to grow in strength, but criticism of Meyer's Marxism grew, and he was dismissed as director in 1930. After local elections brought the Nazis to power in Dessau in 1932, the school was again closed and relocated, this time to Berlin, where it would see out the final year of its existence. Firstly, the Bauhaus structures are often protected by heritage laws that require preserving their original features and materials, which means that any renovation or repair work has to follow strict guidelines and standards, which can increase the cost and time of the project. The Bauhaus Dessau building, designed by Walter Gropius in 1925, underwent a major restoration between 1996 and 2006 that cost about 23 € ($26, £19) million.

Below, we unpack the history of the Bauhaus school, the most memorable works to come from it, and how to put its principles into practice within your own home. László Moholy-Nagy traveled to the Netherlands and the UK and then, in 1937, emigrated to the United States. Here he founded the New Bauhaus in Chicago, which continues to exist today as the IIT Institute of Design. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe also taught in Chicago from 1937, as did Ludwig Hilberseimer and Walter Peterhans from 1938, initially at the Armour Institute of Technology, which became the IIT in 1940.

The inclusion of sport and physical activity in the Bauhaus curriculum had various purposes. First, as Meyer put it, sport combatted a “one-sided emphasis on brainwork.”[55] In addition, Bauhaus instructors believed that students could better express themselves if they actively experienced the space, rhythms and movements of the body. The Bauhaus approach also considered physical activity an important contributor to wellbeing and community spirit.
Today, nearly every art curriculum includes foundation courses in which, on the Bauhaus model, students learn about the fundamental elements of design. Among the best known of Bauhaus-inspired educational efforts was the achievement of Moholy-Nagy, who founded the New Bauhaus (later renamed the Institute of Design) in Chicago in 1937, the same year in which Gropius was appointed chairman of the Harvard School of Architecture. A year later Mies moved to Chicago to head the department of architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology (then known as the Armour Institute), and eventually he designed its new campus. The most representative architect of Bauhaus architecture is Walter Gropius, who founded the Bauhaus school in Weimar, Germany, in 1919. He also influenced many other architects who studied or taught at the Bauhaus, such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer, and László Moholy-Nagy. Gropius called for the school to show a new respect for craft and practical technique, suggesting a return to the attitudes towards art and craft that had characterized the medieval age.

"You see this all the time in current day, when the parking garage is color-coded to help you remember your floor,” adds Jensen. The basic elements of Bauhaus are primary colors, geometric shapes, angular lines, and functional forms. After all, he was the one who insisted that there should be no distinction between form and function. The Bauhaus design style is marked by the absence of ornamentation and by harmony between the function of an object or a building and its design. Despite only being in existence for 14 years, the Bauhaus took root around the globe and remains arguably the most influential arts and design school in the history of the world.

At the same time, the simplicity of the design reflects Bayer's interest in enhanced legibility, generating a large amount of negative space between characters, in contrast to the cramped calligraphic scripts of traditional German typography. Describing typography as "human speech translated into what can be read," Bayer wanted written language to have the clarity of speech, and used only lower-case letters for this design since there was no phonetic distinction between upper and lower case. Each character has the same width, meaning that the letters represent interchangeable spaces on the page. The type was therefore extremely easy to work with and could be adapted to typewriter keyboards and typesetting machines. These aspects of the design perfectly sum up the Bauhaus emphasis on functionality and mass producibility. Like Breuer, Bayer was one of the younger members of the Bauhaus's golden generation, born in Austria in 1900.
The same year Mies van der Rohe emigrated to Chicago to become the head of the IIT, designing its campus which was completed in 1958 as well as the iconic Seagram Building in New York City in 1951. Instead, Gropius and other prominent members of the movement left Germany, spreading the ideas of the Bauhaus from Western Europe to the U.S. and Canada to Israel, and turning it into an international movement. Bauhaus developed into the International Style when Gropius, van der Rohe and other prominent members of the Bauhaus emigrated to the U.S. in the 1930s and influenced the development of modernism in the 1950s and 60s.
As the tables’ color-blocked lacquered tops demonstrate, he’d clearly been a master of color for decades. During the turbulent and often dangerous years of World War II, many of the key figures of the Bauhaus emigrated to the United States, where their work and their teaching philosophies influenced generations of young architects and designers. Gropius stepped down as director of the Bauhaus in 1928, succeeded by the architect Hannes Meyer (1889–1954). Meyer maintained the emphasis on mass-producible design and eliminated parts of the curriculum he felt were overly formalist in nature. Additionally, he stressed the social function of architecture and design, favoring concern for the public good rather than private luxury. Following this, most of the students and teachers who had been involved with possibly the most famous and influential school of modernism had to assimilate, go into hiding, or emigrate.
Four years earlier, Josef Albers had been appointed head of the painting programme at the legendary Black Mountain College in North Carolina, where his students included Robert Rauschenberg and Cy Twombly. After his own flight from Germany in 1933, the Jewish-born Hungarian László Moholy-Nagy formed what later became the Institute of Design in Chicago. Albers was appointed to the teaching staff in 1923 before he had even completed his courses at the school. He began in the glass painting workshop and taught furniture design, drawing and lettering. Hannes Meyer, the second director of Bauhaus Dessau, ensured that one day a week was solely devoted to sport and gymnastics.
Thirdly, Bauhaus architecture embraces integrating art and technology and the collaboration of different disciplines and professions. Bauhaus architects worked closely with artists, craftsmen, engineers, and educators to create a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to design. Bauhaus buildings often incorporate elements of painting, sculpture, photography, typography, graphic design, and innovative technologies and techniques, such as prefabrication, modular systems, and mass production. An example of a Bauhaus building that showcases the integration of art and technology is the Bauhaus Archive, designed by Walter Gropius in 1964. Lastly, Bauhaus architecture inspires sustainable and ecological design development and the preservation and restoration of historical and cultural heritage. Bauhaus buildings are designed to be energy-efficient, resource-saving, and environmentally friendly, using natural ventilation, passive solar heating, and renewable materials.
The whole ordeal would take four and a half more years before he found the right partners and financing. With house-made pastrami, Muenster cheese, sauerkraut, and River House dressing on rye bread. FRIED GREEN TOMATOES
Dejected, but not defeated, Varanese accepted a job as executive chef at the Cardinal Club while he searched for the perfect situation for his restaurant. In 2007, he opened his eponymous restaurant Varanese on Frankfort Avenue at the site of the old Red Lounge at 2106 Frankfort Ave. But he still hadn’t gotten that empty storage facility on River Road out of his system. In 2011, after four and a half years of success at Varanese, the young chef decided to make a play for his first love. But even with the reputation he had established by then, it was still a struggle to finance the $4 million project.

Served with a house-made biscuit and hash browns. Although he’s always been enamored of the location, Varanese’s concept for the River House has morphed over the years.
Varanese had long thought that Louisville underutilized its riverfront dining. He immediately had visions of an upscale seafood restaurant. Chef John's creation with balsamic-glazed fingerling potatoes. Served over tasso ham and cheddar grits, southern succotash and finished with a smoky corn butter sauce. Tossed in green chile cream sauce with roasted corn, concasse tomatoes and pea tendrils.

C.O.D stands for “Catch of the Day” and describes our restaurant’s dedication to serving only the freshest and highest quality ingredients available on the market. Seafood is the focus at C.O.D, but everything else―from the microgreens to pork belly―is also presented at the peak of freshness. The desserts include a peach and sweet potato biscuit cobbler with blackberry Bourbon sauce. There is also a chocolate-peanut butter lava cake that comes with vanilla bean ice cream and a tasty pecan praline pie with chocolate and caramel sauce. For guests who like their desserts a little simpler there is ice cream and sorbet, though with some unusual flavors like sweet corn, caramel sea salt, brown sugar and banana.

Varanese’s Kentucky and South Carolina roots are apparent in the menu at the River House. The chef sought to keep the menu balanced, but it is really the seafood that is the star of this establishment. The Raw Bar offers the River Tower with king crab legs (pictured on the cover). The dish includes a pound of chilled lobster, jumbo shrimp, oysters on a half shell, and colossal lumps of crab and mussels.
He got his start in the culinary business at a little mom-and-pop restaurant in his native Cleveland. By the time he was 16 he felt he could run the kitchen better than the adults around him. His next stop was Johnson & Wales University, when it was in Charleston, South Carolina, where he obtained a BA in food service management and AS in culinary arts. During his tenure in culinary school, Varanese worked as kitchen manager for Magnolias, an upscale Southern restaurant in Charleston. Future plans include an upstairs banquet area, accessible perhaps with an elevator, that will seat up to 350 guests.

However, he found that he couldn’t bring himself to share his beloved riverfront property.

The designers used reclaimed wood from the Germantown Lofts to build the frame of a house, roof included, in the center of the dining area. There is a 20-foot tall by 40-foot wide water wall, and a floor-to-ceiling glass wall overlooking the back courtyard and river. The restaurant also has retractable windows to open the dining space to the river.

Varanese turned to local architect Doug Karnes, who designed Anoosh Bistro, and Ann L. Swope of Swope Design Group to help him realize his vision. They made the River House look and feel like a true river house. Guests will find a charming “home-like” atmosphere as they enter the space from the front porch garden area.
Salads include a crispy fried avocado filled with a chilled shrimp, lump crab and bay scallop salad. There is also a chilled half-pound lobster stuffed with shrimp, bay scallops, and lump crab served with lemons, capers, and dill on a bed of baby greens and cherry tomatoes. Varanese’s Kentucky and South Carolina roots are apparent in the menu at the River House. The chef sought to keep the menu balanced, but it is really the seafood that is the star of this establishment. The Raw Bar offers the River Tower with king crab legs (pictured on the cover). The dish includes a pound of chilled lobster, jumbo shrimp, oysters on a half shell, and colossal lumps of crab and mussels.
Many of his original ideas went into his Frankfort Avenue location and he didn’t want to duplicate what he already had. The River Road building had 16,000 square feet on the first floor and an additional 11,000 square feet upstairs. Initially, Varanese had considered opening his seafood restaurant and leasing out the other parts of the building to help cover his mortgage payments. However, he found that he couldn’t bring himself to share his beloved riverfront property.

C.O.D stands for “Catch of the Day” and describes our restaurant’s dedication to serving only the freshest and highest quality ingredients available on the market. Seafood is the focus at C.O.D, but everything else―from the microgreens to pork belly―is also presented at the peak of freshness. The desserts include a peach and sweet potato biscuit cobbler with blackberry Bourbon sauce. There is also a chocolate-peanut butter lava cake that comes with vanilla bean ice cream and a tasty pecan praline pie with chocolate and caramel sauce. For guests who like their desserts a little simpler there is ice cream and sorbet, though with some unusual flavors like sweet corn, caramel sea salt, brown sugar and banana.
Another highlight is the oysters on the half shell served with a choice of cucumber mignonette, chipotle cocktail or champagne ice. Filled with gulf shrimp, bay scallops, and lump crab tossed in house-made aioli with lemon, capers and dill atop a bed of baby mixed greens. Served with smoked bourbon mustard, herb-toasted brioche, shaved manchego cheese and a roasted garlic aioli. With octopus, shrimp and mussels served over fingerling potatoes and spicy greens with fresh squeezed lemon and extra virgin olive oil. With gulf shrimp, bay scallops and lump crab tossed in lemon, capers and dill.

He got his start in the culinary business at a little mom-and-pop restaurant in his native Cleveland. By the time he was 16 he felt he could run the kitchen better than the adults around him. His next stop was Johnson & Wales University, when it was in Charleston, South Carolina, where he obtained a BA in food service management and AS in culinary arts. Man in the Dark, released by Columbia Pictures, was the first major-studio black-and-white 3D feature and premiered two days before House of Wax.

Inside they find that Jarrod is preparing to dip the drugged and naked Sue into a vat of wax. Just before her body is lowered into the cauldron, Brennan turns off the control switch and covers Sue with his jacket.

Jarrod’s assistant Igor was played by a young Charles Bronson, billed as Charles Buchinsky. Featuring some superior storytelling by director Andre De Toth, an amazing musical score from David Buttolph and a near-perfect cast, House of Wax holds up really well today. For a 1953 feature, it boasts some pretty creepy subject matter, what with bodies covered in wax, and some pretty graphic melting sequences. The film itself is a remake of the 1933 Lionel Atwill-Fay Wray thriller Mystery of the Wax Museum but achieves so much more than its predecessor on the strengths of its sharp color, excellent performances, and yes, the 3-D effects. However, Jerrod isn’t quite dead, he opens a new museum with a new partner Wallace (Paul Cavanaugh; Jungle Jim), and changes his tune on the paying public’s demands, but not after first dispatching those who wronged him. The same night, Sue arrives at the museum after hours to meet with Scott, but Jarrod had sent him on an errand when he heard she was coming.

Soon thereafter, the partner and his girlfriend go missing, and Jarrod, who was thought to have died in the fire, shows up alive but disfigured and wheelchair-bound. He approaches a wealthy financier with a plan for a new wax museum, a “Chamber of Horrors” that will exhibit eerily lifelike wax figures. It is soon noticed, however, that the waxworks bear a striking resemblance to persons mysteriously missing from the community, and this leads to the horrific discovery that the figures on display are actual corpses dipped in wax.
Wallace receives a letter that indicates Jarrod had miraculously survived the fire, though he is now bound to a wheelchair and his hands are crippled, leaving him unable to sculpt. Jarrod gives Wallace a proposition to invest in his new wax museum, which will feature statues made by his assistants, deafmute Igor and alcoholic Leon Averill. He hopes to recreate his favorite pieces from his old museum, but will also concede to popular taste by including a chamber of horrors showcasing historical acts of violence, including the apparent suicide of Burke. House of Wax proved a breakthrough for Price, who would later be credited with reestablishing the popularity of the horror genre. The film was a major box-office success, and it helped spark a wave of 3-D films in the 1950s. Ironically, the director Andre de Toth was blind in one eye and unable to discern the 3-D visual effects.

Opening of the Japanese-American National Museum in Little Tokyo, the only museum in the United States telling the story of Japanese Americans. Frank Lloyd Wright, who has been labeled by the American Institute of Architects as "the greatest American architect of all time," designs the Hollyhock House for heiress Aline Barnsdall on a hill in East Hollywood in what is now Barnsdall Art Park. The home, featuring Mayan and Spanish Revival architecture, would later be named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2019, becoming the first place to earn such a designation in Los Angeles.
For the above reasons, fans of classic horror and suspense movies in particular should enjoy this film—mild camp factor notwithstanding. Upon its release, House of Wax, despite being trashed by critics, was a resounding box office hit, earning almost $24 million on a $1 million budget (in adjusted numbers). Audiences were thrilled by the lavish colors and the surprisingly effective 3-D, as well as with the reemergence of the “master of menace” Price.
Meanwhile, Sidney Wallace, a wealthy financier, is contacted by a wheelchair bound Jarrod, who has survived the fire, but claims that he suffered permanent loss of his hands and legs. As he can no longer sculpt, Jarrod has hired assistants, the deaf-mute Igor and talented sculptor Leon Averill, to help him recreate his wax figures, and using a new procedure he has devised, build another museum. Jarrod says that, as he can no longer create beauty, he plans to make a horror museum and expects that the museum will be profitable.
Finding the place vacant, Sue’s suspicion is confirmed when she uncovers the horrifying truth that the wax figures are actually wax-coated corpses stolen from the morgue, including Burke and Cathy. Today, Griffith Park spans 4,210 acres of natural chapparal-covered terrain and landscaped parkland between Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley. It's one of the largest municipal parks with urban wilderness areas in the United States.
